Female Gaze was a collaborative showcase featuring work by members of the DSM Girl Gang. Members were randomly paired as partners and prompted to use the idea of Female Gaze to generate their collaborative works. The DSM Girl Gang chose this as the show title to celebrate creativity from the lens of anyone who identifies as female in our community. Female Gaze also seeks to confront the "Male Gaze" frequently found in art history. Artists were encouraged to use any medium thus the show produced paintings, photographs, collages, a unique instagram account, animations, sculptures, installations and participatory art. Many artists worked with foreign materials, most all the collaborators were strangers to begin, and the show was a debut exhibition for some.
The opening night was held on October 7th, 2016 and brought a multitude of community supporters. Throughout the night we mingled, discussed the content rich works of art, and bonded over a deep passion to support news ways of creating work. The DSM Girl Gang is immensely proud of all the women who stepped out of their comfort zones and courageously made art with their partner. The theme of Female Gaze resulted in powerful work representing the diverse female body, images of empowerment, and stories of struggle. On October 28th, an intimate group of artists and Girl Gang members gathered with local arts administrator, Siobhan Spain, to discuss selected works. This resulted in a rich conversation which we hope to continue in future programming. We would like to thank Molly's Cupcakes for providing delicious treats and Gravitate for hosting the show for 2 full months.
