DSM Girl Gang programming is driven by our members’ creative needs and feedback. When it was proposed that we host a meet up for members to decorate their own jean jackets - we immediately loved the idea and ran with it.
Earlier this month we hosted a casual meet up at Gravitate (co-working) for gangsters to bring their own jackets and supplies to share while we socialized and produced some awesomely unique gangster insignia. Special thanks to local artist, Levi Beil for creating a set of custom screen print designs that we were able to offer to ladies to experiment with. While some played at the screen printing station making patches and printing on sleeves, ladies were also set up with sewing machines assisting each other with patches and various little additions to their jackets. There were piles of supplies - fabric, paints, pins, buttons- a hodge-podge of supplies for everyone to share. And snacks. Always snacks.
This meet up was a super fun opportunity for connecting with new friends. The variety of styles and decoration that were produced reflects directly on the gang itself- how we are all united in the drive to create and encourage each other but also to express ourselves as individuals. There is a common thread between our members (besides our DSM love) and that is our connection- not to practicing art in a particular way, or fitting in to any mold of being. Embracing other gangsters' work and deriving inspiration as we share and grow together is the heart of why we exist.
If you’re reading this and feeling any hint of FOMO- good news- more events like this will be happening AND we have some very special jackets + merch creations by some of the core gals that will be available for purchase in the new year. Thank you to the new faces that showed up at this meet up, thank you for those of you who invited friends and thank you to Codye for figuring out that sweet sweet gradient technique on the screen printing station and taking our patch game to the next level.
