Get To Know A Girl: Megan Staker

Hi and welcome to the second installment in our Get To Know A Girl interview series! Meet Megan Staker, a sweet lady who leaves a trail of flowers everywhere she goes.

Are you from Des Moines? If not, where are you from and when did you first come to Des Moines? No, I grew up on a farm about 80 miles north east from Des Moines. I moved to Des Moines in 2010 after living in Minneapolis.

What are you favorite things about living in Des Moines? A lot of people might complain that Des Moines is too small and that everyone knows everyone. But I actually see that as an advantage because it makes collaborating and creating with different artists that much easier! I love that there's a sense of community here and that there's a lot of support for creativity and entrepreneurs. And I love that cheap cost of living and that traffic isn't absolutely horrendous.

What is your job by day? Nationwide Insurance

What medium/s of art do you practice? Flowers! real and faux

What drew you to florals? I was practicing making a flower crown to wear in one of my best friends wedding last spring and I thought it was so pretty I didn't want to stop making them.

Why do you make art? The feeling I get after making something someone else loves and cherishes is pretty rewarding. I won't ever get tired of seeing pictures of my crowns tagged on social media or having someone message me to tell me how much they love my work. It has also allowed me to create new amazing friendships and learn new skills! :)

How do you keep yourself motivated? Keeping myself surrounded by positive and like-minded individuals is what really helps me stay motivated. If I'm feeling like I'm in a slump I have a lot of cool people I can reach out to and for that I am grateful.

What do you like about DSM Girl Gang? I love that everyone is so supportive and respectful of each other! I am constantly inspired and motivated by the talent of the members of the DSM Girl Gang. Since being a member I have created so many new friendships, made countless memories, and I even got to host my own DIY flower crown workshop. I'm not sure I'd be where I am today with The Peachpolkadot if it were not for the DSM Girl Gang. And I'd be sad not knowing all the girls I know now.

What do you like about yourself? I like that I am creative and open to new ideas and experiences. I'd like to think that I can get along and have a conversation with just about anyone. I have self awareness. I know I'm not perfect and that I have flaws but that I want to continue to be a better person. I like that I am hilarious and that I crack myself up daily. I like that I have a sense of adventure and good style as well. I like being me!

What do you want right now? From yourself? From your community? From your art? I would like to continue to grow my business and keep creating new things. I would like to be able to make home decor to sell as well!

What can DSM Girl Gang do to help you/other artists/women? I think the girl gang is off to a good start for sure. The DIY workshops we have are amazing and I think we should continue to offer them. I think it would be really cool to have a DSM GG zine and online shop eventually!

How have you cultivated your art over the years? How have you changed from when you started creating? I've only been making flower crowns for a year now but I can definitely tell a difference in my crowns than when I first started. I put a lot more detail in them and found higher quality flowers to use. I discovered a more efficient way to make them that saves me a lot of time.

What is your next big goal? I'm going to be a first time vendor at the Vintage & Made craft fair so I'm currently in the process of making a bunch of cool stuff that I hope people will want to buy!
